Benchmarking, cont'd.

The actual Benchmarking should consist of two sessions, one at each of the participants facilities, over as short a period of time as business commitments will allow. Each session should start with an overview of that operation and the key operating measures. If you’ve done you’re homework and know your own numbers prior to this session, you should be able to compare and contrast your own operation, and focus in on what you want to learn more about.

If possible take photographs, but don’t forget to get permission first. Photo’s will help you remember what you saw. Also you may want to use a tape recorder to take notes with so your eyes can continue to absorb everything around you.

Finally, develop a plan for implementing a Continuous Improvement Program. If you don’t have a method to use what you’ll learn, both now and in the future, what good will all that effort serve.
